The Game (1997)

Director: David Fincher
Certification: 15

Wealthy investment banker Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas) is given a birthday gift from his brother, Conrad (Sean Penn). The gift called "The Game" is to be "a profound life experience" but the details are not given as to exactly what it is. From this moment on nothing will be the same again for Nicholas.

I can't fault the acting but this movie has so many 'clever' plot twists and turns that it ends up eating itself in its own ridiculousness. Some stories lend themselves well to suspension of disbelief but this wasn't one of them as it was trying to be too clever and too intelligent when in actual fact it was neither. The last 1/2 hour of this movie I had lost all interest, but the last scenes were roll your eyes funny though. Luckily David Fincher went on to direct Fight Club.

Get Carter (1971)

Director: Mike Hodges

Jack Carter (Michael Caine), a London gangster, travels to this native Newcastle to bury his brother who died in an accident. When he gets to Newcastle and starts casually asking around about what happened he finds out that his brother didn't die by accident, so he tries to find out who the culprit was. This is a slow and plodding classic British 70's gangster movie that is a cold, bleak and unforgettable view of a decaying industrial city and of the underworld within. Get Carter, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005)

Director: George Clooney
Certification: PG

During the early 50's Joseph McCarthy engaged in 'witch-hunts' to uncover Communists or Communist sympathizers within the government and army. Directed by George Clooney, Good Night, and Good Luck is a docudrama about how Edward R. Murrow and his team from the CBS program 'See it Now' helped expose Senator Joseph McCarthy's unfounded allegations and scaremongering.

This movie really succeeds in taking you back to those times, it is thoughtful and intelligent with all the cast giving fine performances. Stars David Strathairn, George Clooney, Robert Downey Jr. and Jeff Daniels.
