Harold and Maude (1971)

Harold (Bud Cort), is a young man whose favourite pastimes are going to funerals and committing fake suicides, much to his mother's dismay. When hanging out at a funeral Harold is approached by Maude (Ruth Gordon), a vivacious seventy nine year old, who through their developing relationship teaches Harold to live life to the full. A very enjoyable black comedy that exudes humanity in its own unique way.

Heaven (2002)

Philippa (Cate Blanchett) has had enough. The police are not going to do anything, so she has the great idea to bomb an office to kill the drug dealer whom she blames for her husbands death. Unfortunately things do not go as planned, instead of killing the drug dealer the explosion kills four innocent people. From here on in the movie becomes a love story where a sappy police officer (Giovanni Ribisi) gets the hots for the murderess and hatches a plan to save the poor soul by releasing her early into the community.

What we have is half a script, add some subtle performances, some cool cinematography, string it all out until it is getting tedious and there you have it. This is a very mediocre film with some absurd moments dressed up as something significant. Sympathy for the devil is what this is all about. The movie glosses over the real devastation of her actions, which are all too conveniently hidden behind closed doors.

Hero (2002)

Hero resembles an intricately filmed advert for a fabric merchant's new line. You can have enough of flowing movement, flowing material, flowing hair, flowing... Right that's it, it is annoying me now. No doubt this movie was beautiful with its colour co-ordinations and marvellous cinematography, but where is it leading us, up the garden path maybe? There is a message here - your life is not worth a damn, so sacrifice yourself for the greater good, only the state is important. Which I'm sure Qin Shi Huang and Mao Zedong would have agreed with.
