10 Rillington Place (1971)
Director: Richard Fleischer
Certification: 15
Reviewed: 15/03/05
Richard Attenborough and John Hurt star in a disturbing portrayal of the notorious real life serial killer John Reginald Christie (Richard Attenborough), who lived in a seedy ground floor flat in Notting Hill Gate, London. Whilst living at 10 Rillington Place, Christie is known to have killed 8 women and gave evidence that lead an innocent man to be hanged for a murder that he committed. This movie, unlike some, does not paper over or glamorise the subject, it depicts the real tragedies and the hurt that these monsters leave in their wake.

Also Known As: Nineteen Eighty-Four
John Hurt plays Winston Smith who starts to question the principles of the government, just thinking of dissenting is a crime so tries to avoid Big Brother's surveillance system and being found out as a thought-criminal. A very faithful adaptation of George Orwell's book of a chilling totalitarian regime that boasts magnificent performances by the likes of John Hurt, Suzanna Hamilton and Richard Burton.

Also Known As: Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (U.S.A.)
A very seaworthy adaptation of a Jules Verne Victorian novel of the same name. After the sinking of many ships the survivors of these ships return with stories of a ocean monster, so a crew is put together to investigate what is taking place. James Mason, Kirk Douglas, Peter Lorre star in this very enjoyable action sci-fi movie for all the family.

Day of the Triffids turns into Dawn of the Dead. The only thing scary is that so many like this badly acted and ludicrous movie. Seeing London's streets completely clear of cars, people and bodies was creepy but it hardly fitted into the storyline to become another gaping plot hole, (maybe that's where the cars went) which the film has many of. The public are just expected to be blinded by the light show and it doesn't attempt to explain these holes even in the most incredible way. I probably would have forgotten this 28 minutes later if not for the fact I wasted my time and money watching it.

The 51st State (2001)
Director: Ronny Yu

An American chemist, Elmo McElroy (Jackson) has created a new recreational drug and heads off across the Atlantic to Liverpool anticipating an easy quick deal that will make him millions, but things go wrong.
Robert Carlyle and Samuel L Jackson perform as well as can be expected considering the material they had to work with. This was the most tiresome movie I've seen in a while, talk about moronic... Some movies are the dogs bollocks and some movies are just plain bollocks this one's the latter. The ending I wanted to see was everyone involved rounded up and incarcerated for the rest of their lives. Then a good old fashioned Bobby stating "crime does not pay folks!" But that wouldn't be cool would it?
