Phantasm (1979)

Director: Don Coscarelli
Certification: 18
Reviewed: 23/11/05
Also Known As: The Never Dead (Australia)

A young boy, Mike, has only his brother and a friend to look up to as he has recently lost his parents. He finds out that there's some strange goings on down the mortuary and the cemetery where his parents were laid to rest. These goings on include a funeral director known as the 'Tall Man' who can lift a coffin on his own, flying 'driller-killer' chrome balls, strange dwarf monks and a portal to god knows where amongst other things. This is a low-budget surreal horror offering that's definitely worth a look.

The Pianist (2002)

Director: Roman Polanski
Certification: 15
Reviewed: 08/02/06
Also Known As: Der Pianist (Germany), Le Pianiste (France)

The Pianist is a true story of how Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody), a brilliant pianist, survived the Nazi holocaust in Warsaw. Adapted from Szpilman's book 'Death of a City' which was first published in 1946, Roman Polanski's movie comes across as a straight account of one person's experiences of the degradation of humanity without over sentimentalising the subject. Simply unmissable.

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)

Director: Peter Weir
Certification: PG
Reviewed: 30/12/05

At the turn of the last century a group of young ladies go out on a school trip to Hanging Rock. Four girls leave the party to go off exploring on their own and at first all is well, but after a while they seem to start acting strangely then they vanish without trace. With the disappearance of the girls the tranquillity of the whole school is forever shattered. Picnic at Hanging Rock is a subtle and beautiful movie that is well worth watching.
