If it had merely been a passenger airliner crash the Doomwatch team would not have been interested, but the crash in question was very unusual in that all the plastic on the plane had inexplicably melted. Tobias Wren, on the first day in his new job, is sent to look for evidence. It is not until his returning flight home that he discovers that the plane he is travelling in is also infected.
