James McCarthy is suspected of murdering his spiteful bullying father when he is discovered at the scene of the crime. Everything points to his following his father to the Boscombe pool (a lake), where after an argument he is believed to have smashed his father's head with the butt of a shotgun. Although the evidence is only circumstantial it looks as if James McCarthy is guilty of the crime and may hang for it.
