Adrian Gall, a renowned thespian, tries his luck joining The Club of the Damned as he narrates his story of the supernatural. Adrian has for many years suffered from nightmares and rages, believing he had something stolen from him when he was touring Venice. He comes to the decision that he must travel back to find what had been lost - to lay a ghost. As the actor spends time seeking answers to his disturbances in the haunted old city, he is met by an old flame, Leonora.

Countess Ilona invites four ex-lovers to her castle in Transylvania for a reunion party. The first three to arrive are curious as to why they have been invited, and as they chat over dinner it transpires that this is the tenth wedding anniversary of Ilona's marriage to the late Count Anton Tyrhh. The Count was a brutal man who reportedly died a horrible lingering death shortly after their wedding.

Although the creature had entered the castle from the outside, the guests suspect that Ilona has something to do with the death. Could this be some sort of revenge perpetrated by Ilona?

Lady Sybil Manners has become convinced that there is a prowler or an apparition that is out to do her harm. For every evening this unseen spectre leaves slimy footsteps from the river up to her country manor house to stalk in the shadows. It can be of no coincidence that Lady Sybil's husband drowned himself some years earlier in this very same river - or can it? Her two sons are puzzled as to the reasons for her obsession, but perhaps one of them unconsciously knows the answer to this mystery?

English Consul, Paul Strickland, helps along the death of his Hungarian invalid wife Elizabeth by withholding her heart pills when she is in need of them. Paul remarries two years later to Theresa, and upon the family's move back to England Elizabeth's old nanny, knowing that Paul had helped cause the death of Elizabeth, leaves his daughter Viktoria, a present of a child size doll. The doll named Rosa appears to have a life of its own.

Howard Lawrence and his family spend some time staying at a spooky Swiss inn up in the mountains, where Lord Byron and Mary Shelly had once visited. They find there are no other guests staying at the inn, and the proprietors supplement their income by putting on lewd and bizarre Frankenstein-like marionette shows, with life-size puppets. Somehow the puppets seem a bit too lifelike...

Two male companions travel throughout Europe in the search of adventure. One evening they meet Dorabella, a beguiling young woman who is also an accomplished magician. Walter Von Lamont, falls instantly in love with adorable Dorabella, blind to the dangers that are all around him. His friend can see that Dorabella is draining the very life out of him as they follow her around the countryside. The companion's eventually reach a castle and journeys end.
